For sale – BENETEAU OCEANIS CLIPPER 473 NZ$279,000
Arguably the Beneteau 473 is the one model that has stood out from all production boats as a comfortable luxurious cruiser that also performs well under sail. In addition to these qualities the 473 is a very safe blue water boat. The keel stepped mast is just one example.
When this model first hit the market it was an instant success and many were put into the charter industry as they were a sought after hire. However the charter industry is typically hard on boats and therefore it’s not often you find a 473 that has never been chartered. Cristina has never been in charter.
The 473 and its smaller version the 423 were the last high quality fit out vessels produced by Beneteau as the company had to change its construction model to compete within an increasingly competitive and more economically produced boat market.
Cristina has only two previous owners and as the inventory sheet shows she is well fitted out however there are a few items worthy of further mention:
Cristina was fitted out for blue water sailing. She has a brand new 2019 4 kva generator allowing normal electric household appliances to be used on board (toaster, hair dryer etc). The 2017 AC driven water maker produces nearly 70 litres an hour of the sweetest water you will ever taste, and is configured to fill up any one of the four water tanks on board. Its water carrying capacity is impressive in itself with a total of nearly 900 litres spread over the 4 tanks. Cristina has a particularly economical 100 HP Yanmar diesel engine ( this is unique as most 473’s were fitted with a smaller 75 hp model) with only 3300 hours. This engine’s fuel consumption is approximately 3.5 litres an hour with a 235 litre fuel tank. Needless to say the motoring range of Cristina is impressive. Included in the sale are additional portable fuel tanks allowing for an extra 250 litres to be carried on deck.
Communications have been made easy with a new Iridium Go satellite communications system. This little unit basically works as a WiFi modem and allows connection with any of your personal devices. We bought a simple plan off Ocens which gave us 150 free talk minutes a month, unlimited free texts, and unlimited data all for $120 USD a month. Additional comms features include a service which displays the ships position, course, speed and track. and is accessible to anyone at home who wants to follow your voyage.
Additional safety features include a new Vesper XB800 AIS unit which is produced by a Kiwi company and displays all vessels fitted with AIS, tracking their course and speed as well as their ‘Closest Point of Approach ‘. This was a great asset on our voyage especially when watch keeping. All commercial vessels and the vast majority of blue water recreational cruising yachts have AIS. On watch we also carried mini AIS linked Man Overboard beacons in our PFD lifejackets. Once activated the beacon sets off an alarm at the navigation station within Cristina and the location of the beacon will display on the smart phone devices on board. The beauty of this system is that the alarm and location will also sound and display on any other vessels within VHF range. Like the Iridium Go, the Vesper also works like a Wi-Fi modem which allows this information to be displayed on any laptop, or smart phone. It provides a real time GPS position of Cristina which can be picked up by other navigational systems on board such as Open CPN.
Cristina has sailed halfway around the world. It is a turn key blue water boat which provides a safe, yet fast cruising platform for her new owners. She is a New Zealand registered ship, and all import duties have been paid.
As a negotiable part of the sale, the vendors (with Royal New Zealand Navy and navigational instructor backgrounds) are happy to assist Cristina’s new owners in any planning and trip preparation. Additionally and if required, we could also accompany you to an offshore South Pacific destination / location.
