Laurent Giles NW 50 Steel Cutter: Yacht “Tavake”, launched in 1995, moored in The Bay of Islands, NZ.
The Designer: Laurent Giles Ltd. Is a prestigious U.K. yacht design firm within the international marine leisure since 1927. Their portfolio consists of over 1300 different sailing yacht and motorboat remarkable designs e.g.: “Vertue” Class Sloop; “Donella” Class; John Guzwell’s “Trekka” (in 1959, the smallest vessel to ever complete a circumnavigation) and “Treasure”; Eric & Susan Hiscock’s “Wanderer II”; “Westerly” yachts, The “Myth of Malham”, the first aluminium ocean racing yacht. 23 years after launching, Tavake’s welded, mild steel hull and deck has no rust due to the application of a Metco aluminium-zinc thermal flame sprayed, “cold galvanizing” system.
The steel hull was designed for and constructed by the owner, a veteran single-handed offshore sailor and certified shipyard welder and metal boat builder, who has owned the yacht since launching. X-rays of the hull welds are available.
