Scandi Yachts Finland
Year 1986
Construction Balsa core fiberglass hull, deck and interior bulkheads.

Moonshadow was built of state-of-the-art unidirectional glass with 11⁄2”
end grain balsa core. The hull and deck were built over male plugs,
which enabled the builder to pre-stress the laminates over the plugs for a
finer, structurally integral finished product than can be achieved from a
female mold. Unidirectional E type glass and mat, plus woven roving and
mar were used with isothalic resins to achieve a high glass/resin content
ratio. Hull and deck scantlings meet or exceed to ABS standards. Hull
specifications are 1⁄4 glass outside, 11⁄2” end grain balsa core and 3/16”
glass inside. Deck specifications are 3/16” glass outside, 11⁄2” balsa and
1/8” glass inside. The thick balsa core provides tremendous strength and
exceptional sound and thermal insulations as well. The hull to deck joint
is totally fiber glassed both inside and out. There are no mechanical
fasteners that could potentially create leaks. Two watertight bulkheads
separate the living space from the forepeak and aft lazarette. Large
fiberglass floors and longitudinal stringers create a grid for strength and
rigidity from forward of the keel aft into the engine room.
Keel is welded stainless steel, approximately 1/2” top and bottom, 1/4”
sides, and contains ballast in lower section with two fuel and two water
tanks above the ballast. The keel measures approximately 19 feet where
joined to the hull. 41 keel bolts, approximately 3/4”, are threaded into
the top keel plating which is approximately 1/2”.
Rudder foil is foam cored fiberglass over an aluminum shaft with welded
aluminum ribs. Rudder shaft is approximately 6” at hull entry.
Spare rudder is foam cored fiberglass with heavy stainless pintails and
gudgeons mounted on the transom. Includes a long wood tiller.

Moonshadow

Moonshadow Deerfoot 2-62 specifications
Fuel Tankage 170 gallons stainless steel integral with keel
90 gallons stainless steel integral with keel
Water Tankage 75 gallons stainless steel integral with keel
70 gallons stainless steel integral with keel
Engine Yanmar 4LH-HTE (1994) 7039 hours as of 5/1/2019
Reduction gear Hurth HSW630-A1-2.5:1
Shaft 50mm stainless steel
Two cutlass bearings, one in hull shaft log, one in stainless steel V-strut.
Shaft loads are transferred to the hull via a thrust bearing housing bolted
to a steel thrust bulkhead mounted to the engine bed stringers. The
thrust bearing is coupled with an AquaDrive CV joint which can
accommodate up to a 7 degree shaft misalignment. This system,
specified by Steve Dashew, relieves the engine from bearing all shaft
loads which in turn allows the engine to be mounted with soft engine
mounts, virtually eliminating propeller shaft or engine vibrations and
noise being transferred to the hull.

Propeller Max Prop 22” 3 blade bronze propeller. Pitch is adjustable.
Generator Northern Lights 8kW (1995) 5384 hours as of 5/1/2019

Auto Pilots
(2) Redundant W-H Autopilot systems with (3) remotes
WH Autopilot rudder angle sensor
WH rudder angle display (nav station)
** NOTE – The autopilot system above was replaced with the Simrad components listed
below shortly after our acquisition of Moonshadow in 2012. All WH system
components were retained as a back-up system, and worked during sea trials after the
new installations, but have not been used in 6 years. We consider the WH system as a
back up to the new (also triple redundant) Simrad system. The Simrad autopilot
components were installed to work with the original hydraulic ram rudder control which
consists of two redundant hydraulic pumps, two redundant electric motors (rebuilt
2015), and a single hydraulic ram (rebuilt 2015). Though the WH system was
considered the best (and was specified by Steve Dashew on most every boat he built),
we opted to update to more current technology and have never regretted this move.
The Simrad system has been trouble free since day one and never requires any fussing
with sea-state, or gain adjustments (though such adjustments are possible). We simply
set and forget while the Simrad system handles the steering with usually no more than
one spoke of the wheel right or left of dead center to maintain course. With control
heads in three locations, we can make course changes wherever we are.
Simrad AC42 CPU

Electrical system
Moonshadow is fully ready for foreign 220-240 volt shore power systems with a separate shore
power cord and topside connection. 240 volt shore power feeds to a 240/110 volt step down
transformer which then powers the 110 volt breaker panel (as if plugged into a US marina), a
separate 240 volt battery charging system, and two 240 volt accessory outlets in the engine
room.
House battery bank: 880-amp hour 12 volt
(8 x 225 amp 6 volt Trojan T-105 golf cart deep cycle wet cell batteries – replaced 2017)
Engine start battery bank (2) Gel cell 12 volt start batteries for engine and generator
(replaced 2017)
Perko battery switches facilitating battery crossover
Heart Interface 2500 inverter/charger (110 volt)
Link 2000 Battery monitor
Two Sunpower X-21 345 watt solar panels
Outback Flexmax 80 80 amp solar panel MPPT controller
Two 110 volt shore power inputs
240 volt shore power input (dual phase US fitting, but wired for foreign single phase 240)
240V to 110V step-down transformer (allows use of 110 volt appliances with 240 volt supply)
240V Sterling Power Products battery charger (convertible to 110v) (2007)
160 amp secondary alternator on Yanmar main engine
Primary alternators on Yanmar main engine and the generator motor can be switched to charge
starting bank, house bank, or both.
